You’ve decided you want some cosmetic enhancements to bring out the best in your teeth. You’re considering veneers to make your smile glow or teeth whitening for that pristine look. But there is something you should know before making an appointment: your teeth need to be in healthy shape. In this article, you’ll learn why you need a strong base before adding improvements.

Why Do I Need Healthy Teeth Before Cosmetic Work?

Just as a house needs a sturdy foundation to support it, your teeth need to be strong to handle additions like porcelain veneers, braces, crowns, or bonding.

If you’re considering cosmetic upgrades, it’s important to first visit the dentist for a thorough exam; this will allow them to screen for issues related to gum disease, tooth decay, or other complications that need to be taken care of before you worry about aesthetics.

What Do I Need to Fix Prior to Cosmetic Dentistry?

  • Cavities: Cavities are caused by tooth decay and can be a sign of weak teeth. Before any further work can be done, your dentist may need to fill these tiny holes in your teeth with a natural, tooth-colored composite resin.
  • Gum disease: Symptoms like red, swollen gums, chronic bad breath, or gum recession are symptoms of gum disease and may require attention from your dentist before cosmetic work can be done. Procedures like scaling and root planing (a deep cleaning below the gumline) or an oral antibiotic are common treatments for this affliction.

What Can I Do to Get Healthier Teeth?

The good news is that it’s not impossible to remedy a condition like gingivitis, for example. It all starts with a good oral hygiene routine and routine checkups and cleanings from a professional:

  • Brush and floss daily: Brushing your teeth twice a day for two minutes each time is an essential part of preventing tooth decay and other oral health issues. Flossing once a day will reach bacteria and plaque that your toothbrush can’t.
  • Maintain a good diet: Drinking plenty of water will wash away food particles and bacteria, keep saliva production optimal, and neutralize the acid that erodes tooth enamel. Avoiding an excessive intake of sugar and starches will also minimize harmful acids formed by mouth bacteria.
  • Use mouthwash: Not only does it freshen your breath, but mouthwash also kills bacteria and removes plaque and food debris. Depending on your needs, you can choose an anti-bacterial mouthwash (for those who may be prone to gum disease) or a fluoride mouthwash to prevent cavities. Talk to your dentist about which type would best help your mouth stay healthy. Use it for 30 seconds after brushing in the morning and at night.

Before upgrading the attractiveness of your smile, visit your dentist to see if there are areas that need to be addressed first.
